About Eik Web

Inger

My name is Inger. My last name, Eik, means 'oak', hence the oak leaf in my header. I got my first PC in 1993, a 'toy' that I pulled apart to see what was inside it and how it worked, and then put it together again. To my great amazement it was still working! That got me hooked.

In 1996  I learnt the basic elements of HTML, used Notepad and wrote code by hand, and by the end of the year I had a very basic, very boring website up and running. My second attempt, in spring 1997, was a website for the school I was working at. The same autumn it was refined a bit, and some extra pages added, and it was 'officially launched' on the council's 'open school day' arrangement. Our headmaster was more than happy after he had asked around and found that ours was the first school in the region with a website!

I soon decided that using Notepad was time-consuming, so I kept looking for a programme that made me work more efficiently. I tried a number of different ones without finding anything I liked, at least not until 2004, when I found the HTML Editor from a company named CoffeeCup Software. This is a very all-purpose programme that allowed me to work faster than before, and with full control over details. The HTML Editor is still a most valued part of my tool kit, although I'm using other programmes too, mainly from the same software company.

Over the years I have mainly created websites for small to medium sized businesses, but also for clubs, NGOs, image galleries and travelling, in Norway, Germany, Turkey and America. I have also made some few personal websites. Some sites have been multilingual (English, German, Norwegian, Turkish and Dutch). In my Portfolio I have picked some of the work I've done, both before and after the 'responsive revolution'.

2013.
My first responsive site. I didn't know anything about responsive frameworks at that time, so I just hand coded, using media queries and widths in percent. It was an experiment, to see how well I was able to do it. I was quite pleased with the result, and, luckily, so was the site owner.

I did another responsive site in the same way, just to improve my skills. This was for a friend who was taking part in the design. We used some slide shows that were created in a programme called Wow slider.

This site was crerated for an American writer and journalist. She had employed a professional designer for the colour scheme and most of the graphics. A friend of mine had started creating the site, but as he was quite busy, I was asked to take over. The site has been developing over the years, and there have been quite a number of updates.

I did not originally design this site, but I was asked to make translations of the original German contents. Later I was also tasked with making the site responsive. There was a problem with some flash contents that the site owner was very keen on keeping, so I ended up making a separate site for mobile devices. On that site the flash was replaced by a slide show.

I had discovered the Bootstrap frame work. This is my first go at it. It took some time and sweating. The site owner is one of my neighbours who is selling spices, herbs, plants and a lot more. Luckily she liked the result of my work.

Since 2004 I have been making numerous updates and changes to this site, including translations of the content. In Now, working with the Bootstrap grid system, and having practised a bit, the work could be completed faster than the first attempt at Bootstrap.  This website is part of a larger site which I still have to make responsive.

I started working with the previous site owner in 2013, first making a nearly 20 years old site responsive, without changing the look and feel. Quite a job! Then there was a new owner who wanted to modernize the site, and the picture is showing the new site, what it is going to be like. It is based on web shop software from the company MIVA, using one of their templates. The old site is still up, but the new one will go live shortly.

This is a site of my own, showing what I'm doing with some of my time. It is actually the 3rd 'generation', the first one built in 2005. I have used the Foundation frame work this time, as I found the Bootstrap page elements a bit rigid.  With Foundation I find it easier to make the design I want.

In this second gallery I'm show casing some of the sites I created in the years from 1998 to 2012. They all were working well for a time, and some of them are actually still on-line. But most of them have now been replaced with responsive sites, either by me or by someone else.
